• 2010 Winter Olympic & Paralympic Games

Overview:

Cascade performed a number of tasks for the 2010 Winter Olympic & Paralympic Game Organizing Committee including wildlife assessments, construction monitoring, GIS mapping, recreation impact assessments, sediment and erosion control, and initial environmental reviews (IER). Project Description:

Nordic Centre

Cascade conducted a Recreational Impact Assessment for the site of the Nordic Centre, the Callaghan Valley. This area hosted the cross country skiing, biathlon and ski jumping events and will contribute to the community long in to the future as a sport, community and commercial recreation legacy.

Whistler Athlete Village

Built to house athletes and officials attending the 2010 games and showcasing leading edge planning and building practices. As part of an Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) review, Cascade conducted ecological surveys of terrestrial and aquatic habitat and acted as environmental coordinator for the process.

Sliding Centre

Cascade provided site specific modification recommendations for site preparation at this location, as well as ongoing environmental monitoring during the site preparation phase of the project.

Men’s and Ladies’ Speed and Technical Skiing Events

In addition to acting in a coordinating role and conducting the environmental studies for the CEAA review, Cascade was on site during the Olympics, testing creeks for possible adverse effects of snow hardening materials. Cascade also conducted a games time audit of the operations for the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC).
